PRESS RELEASE

S.M.A.R.T. presents: "Pie to the People 2"
Art and Education event emphasizing RE-USE
Announces Pie King Michael Westheimer and Pie Queen Debra Guerrero

San Antonio, TX - March 10, 2012 -- In an effort to demonstrate unity among the arts, S.M.A.R.T. (Supporting Multiple Arts Resources Together) holds the second annual Pie to the People 2 event at Historic La Villita. This year's Pie to the People 2 focuses on educating our community and our city on the power of REUSE - what you have in your immediate environment available for creativity and self expression. S.M.A.R.T. invites community, arts organizations and supporters to take part in a parade from the Blue Star Arts complex to La Villita where 3,000 slices of FREE delicious apple pie await the people!

This free family-friendly event transforms Maverick Plaza into an engaging atmosphere showcasing: educational and interactive art workshops that incorporate REUSE; Art on the Spot design competition where local nonprofits pair with schools and students for a 3-hour art-making challenge; and What the Fork? - a community collaborative art project evolving throughout the day. All of these events will utilize recycled and reusable materials. Pie and community - changing the way we support the arts in our city!

This year S.M.A.R.T. is thrilled to showcase Debra Guerrero and Michael Westheimer as this year's Pie King and Queen. "I am proud to reign over this very important fundraising event supporting two of my favorite pastimes...eating pie and patronizing the arts...," states Debra Guerrero. And Michael Westheimer enthusiastically adds. "Pie is mi vida! LET THEM EAT PIE!!! "

Pie to the People Parade event kicks off the day with a route from Blue Star Arts Complex to La Villita. Parade participants include, Pie to People Float showcasing the Pie King and Queen, non profits, artists, schools, cyclists, dogs, band(s)...our San Antonio Community. Once the procession arrives at La Villita the design Art on the Spot design competition begins.

What is Art on the Spot? spare parts Founder and arts Educator Mary E. Cantu will partner schools with community nonprofits to compete in a cutting-edge design competition utilizing reusable materials. Cantu explains, "If you ever wanted to learn more about how creativity can turn trash into beauty and art, this is the place to be. Attendees will observe creative design and art making that will inspire everyone to rethink what they throw away and even recycle!" 48 hours before the competition, S.M.A.R.T. will announce the selected RE-USE material so teams may have ample time to strategize and get their creative juices flowing. Designs will be judged by David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art. "I am excited to participate in this worthy event," notes Rubin, "San Antonio is one of our nation's most creative cities. By nurturing our young artists with projects like this, we prepare them to think creatively about all aspects of life."

Ongoing throughout the day is S.M.A.R.T.'s "What the Fork?" community collaborative art project, led by Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School for Art + Design students. Reusing the plastic forks that people use to eat their FREE pie slice, the students in conjunction with the public will create Fork Art. And while people are eating pie and creating fork art, the community may choose to participate in one of many artist led art education workshops emphasizing reusable materials.

Maverick Plaza will showcase live music and Arneson River Theatre will offer youth performance. "This is a day where the community comes together to demonstrate unity for the arts. Yvette Benavides, Director S.M.A.R.T. exclaims, "We all have an opportunity to learn more about the power of reuse and March 10, 2012 is the day to do it!"
