Within an Arms Length by Jerry Gann
Artist Statement
My mixed media paintings
have me involved in the act of collage as a means of communicating poetic
relationships I find in nostalgic refuse. My earlier work had me focused
on the combination of paintbrushes, wood, silicone, polyurethane and
oil paint as a way of joining object and surface. I am interested in
incorporating unconventional art making materials within the context
of my expressive brushstrokes. My most recent body of work combines
discarded objects that I have found and reintroduced by means of regeneration
and defilement in order to question aesthetic beauty. As these lost
items are introduced into the painting surface they become disguised
by the refreshing quality of color and form in order to be rediscovered
again by the viewer.
